Eating at Manuels when I worked downtown was something I look forward to every week. It was my favorite lunch time. I often met a friend there and one day around 1991, we were going to meet at 11:45. I got there and the host let me look for her. Not seeing her, I was seated at a table in the front room and I waited a bit. She didn’t have a mobile phone at the time, but after a few minutes I did call her office to see if she had been detained for some reason, but she wasn’t there. I went ahead and ordered, and enjoyed my entire lunch wondering what could have happened to her. About the time my plate was cleared by the server, I looked up to see her exiting the restaurant. She had been in the other room all along, but somehow I had overlooked her when I had checked there. We had eaten our lunches at separate tables that day. We had a good laugh about it and went on to meet for lunch there for many more years. She has a mobile phone now!
